Fox News and Republican Party and Sarah Palin and palin and politics14 Nov 2008 02:34 pm

It’s been a good week for Sarah Palin. Let us count the ways: The New York Times reports that she does know that Africa is not a country, and that reports to the contrary from unnamed GOP sources were a hoax. She has been the media darling of the GOP governors’ meeting in Florida. And now it looks like former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, one of her main competitors for the title of Republican Presidential Candidate in 2012, has been rattled by Palin’s popularity in the party. The Associated Press reports today that the “surprising ascendancy of … Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and her popularity among some GOP conservatives have left Romney wondering whether he could wage a viable second campaign for the White House, according to friends and advisers.”

Sarah was supposed to give a news conference today at the Republican Governer’s Conference, but instead of a press conference it turned into a briefing session with four questions. Of those four questions she actually answered zero.

Asked why she had held no news conferences during the election season, Palin responded that “I don’t even want to talk about strategy within a campaign that’s over.”

To each of the three other questions — about how she would use her political celebrity, why the ticket didn’t do better with women and Hispanic voters and what the message would be going forward — Palin turned each answer into a comment on Republican governors.

Isn’t it wonderful? She is well on her way to “plow(ing) through that door” in 2012 as she said in her FOX News Interview over the weekend.

As Tony Perkins, president of the conservative Family Research Council said, “She is the future of the party. She can bring in those independents, those who have not historically voted Republican, like Ronald Reagan did.”

So I guess the future of the Republican Party is not answering questions in a press conference that you call.

You know, I used to respect Ralph Nader for his ecological stance and consumer advocacy, even though his book never deterred me from wanting a Corvair.

Somewhere between the 1996 and 2000 elections, after his facial expressions went to somewhere in the uncanny valley, I started to think of him as more of a sideshow attraction.

But referring to Obama as an “Uncle Tom” is just wrong. I know that he meant he doesn’t want Obama to pander to corporate America’s wishes but did he have to use such a racially charged phrase? In what way does Nader think that this will improve his image?

Shepard Smith from Fox News gives him multiple chances recount the Uncle Tom comment but Nader sticks to his guns. In all fairness to Ralph, Smith did not let him explain what he meant by the remark. But we can’t expect that from Fox News now can we?

This clip from Fox News must be seen to be believed (how can the governor of any state not know that Africa is a continent?). Ponderous. I imagine we will be getting truckloads more of this in the coming days [ed: Your first morning delivery of McCain-Palin infighting is here from the NYT]:

Update: Here is another video of Cameron on O’Reilly:

Cameron restates a lot of the same claims as he does in the previous video. I think that the best thing to come out in this video (@ 5:25) is that Randy Scheunemann was fired because he didn’t like people Nailin’ Palin. LOL!!

UPDATE: These charges are from a “small bitter type of person”. Funny, most of the small people I’ve tasted have been quite tasty. Someone must have prepared this one wrong or maybe it grazed on too many dandelions.

The Talking Points Memo put up this video of excerpts from this past Sunday’s talk shows. It makes me giggle.

Jon Friedman on the Wall Street Journal’s, Market Watch has picked Sarah’s new career.

The news networks are desperately looking for a gimmick that would give one an edge over the others.
Palin would be a natural as an anchor or commentator, and I write that respectfully.

As they say in sports, she has all the tools. On the stump she has proven to be vivacious, lively and charismatic and, with a large group of Americans, wildly popular. Plus, she’ll need a friendly outlet to plug her inevitable campaign memoir.

As long as she only reads copy she would be fine as an anchor but there would be too much palining if she went off script. A commentator is a much better fit. I see her as a Bill O’Reilly yes woman.

Fox News has a report that shows that Sarah Palin’s firing of her public safety commissioner was not the first time the Alaska governor stirred controversy.

The article states that Sarah Palin, “has skirted state ethics rules before for personal benefit and used her office to help friends and supporters”. It goes on to list many examples since 2002.

And yes, you read that right, I said Fox News.
