Twas Inauguration — or, A Visit From Obama (apologies to C.C. Moore, and all of you)
Twas Inauguration, and in the White House,
Not a Neocon stirred, not one Leo Strauss.
The Democrats were lined up on Penn Ave. with care,
In hopes that Obama soon would be there.
The lobbyists nestled, all snug at their desks,
Vying for standing, and dodging the press.
Watched Wolf on his network, and O’Reilly on Fox,
And then settled in for long hours of talk.
When the retinue neared there arose such a clatter,
Tourists stood on tiptoe to see what was the matter.
As photographers flashed, and talking heads hammed,
The soon-to-be-president arrived with his fam.
Now Daschle! Now Holder! Now Napolitano!
On, Biden! On, Clinton! And now where will Bill go?
We will salvage the markets, and clean up the air!
Restore our foreign standing, and reform healthcare!
Obama looks focused, already seems older,
and he carries America’s hopes on his shoulders.
Is he up to the challenge? Can he pass the big test?
Or will Congress and infighting end in a mess?
It’s too soon to tell, and too early to know,
How long it will take to get on the right road.
The problems he’s facing are enormous in scope,
But while the future’s uncertain, at least now there’s hope.
